At VIP Balloons we simply love the illustrations that Helen Oxenbury creates. Most famous for her water colours for ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’, Helen has also created some beautiful illustrations for ‘Alice In Wonderland’. Born in 1938 and now living in North London Helen is a two-time winner and four-time runner up for the annual Kate Greenaway Medal, the British librarians’ award for illustration. For the 50th anniversary of that Medal (1955–2005) her 1999 illustrated edition of Alice in Wonderland was named one of the top ten winning works.
She turned Alice from the traditional girl seen in the original books with a fresh and modem look. Her illustrations suddenly make the book more accessible to the modern reader and therefore more inviting.
Her characters have now been transformed from the outlandish ones we saw before into softer and warmer characters.
In 2006, her illustrations from ‘Alice In Wonderland’ were used as stamps for the Royal Mail. More details about some of her other work can be found here.
Each Monday we take a look at artists that have inspired us. Sometimes they are watercolourists, like Helen, other times they are street artists like Banksy, who we looked at last week. We find art in all it’s form inspiring and want to share this with you.
If you have been inspired and want to share, please contact us as we’d love to hear from you.
