Samuel Stamp-Dod from VIP Balloons has been providing balloon décor since the late 1990s but has only been twisting for the last five years. Twisters are a very special group of balloon artists who twist modelling balloons into creations, typically dogs and swords.
The Blackpool Balloon Bash is a training weekend like no other – a hotel on the Blackpool seafront is filled with people who make a living out of this curious art form. Many include face painting, magic, singing or comedy into their work and a small few, like Samuel, add twisting to the décor they provide for parties and celebrations.
“I’ve only ever done an hour or two of twisting classes before,” explained Samuel, “my main focus for my training has been in providing décor. However last year I met several amazing Twisters at the World Balloon Convention in San Diego and I was determined to advance my skills.”
Samuel had been making some simple designs since starting VIP Balloons and often is complimented on the creations he makes, however he wanted to go further so signed up to attend his first twisting convention – The Blackpool Balloon Bash.
The Bash took place in March 2019 at The Doric Hotel in Blackpool and is hosted by Frank Sweeny and Daniel Jefferson. Eighty delegates from all over the UK and beyond booked in to the hotel for three days of latex based lectures. The Bash has been running for several years and keeps growing and growing as more and more artist want to attend. This years Bash had two internationally recognised teachers; Antonio Bécares Rodríguez from Italy and Phileas Flash from Canada.
